Origins
Poker has its origins in various cultures around the world. It is said to have evolved from the Persian game As-Nas, though this is controversial. Other gaming historians link poker to the French game poque. As Nas was played with a deck of 25 cards in five suits. It had similar poker hand rankings to today’s games. In the 1800s, the game was first played in the United States with 52 cards. Its popularity spread to riverboats in the Mississippi Valley and eventually became a part of the frontier culture in the US.
